Did you know that God is always speaking to you?
If you didn’t know this, it’s probably because you haven’t been paying attention to His voice. If you’re currently facing challenges in life, that could be one of the reasons why. However, if you can learn to discern what God is saying to you, it will not only help you overcome problems—it can even help you avoid them altogether.
It’s honestly hard to imagine how someone could truly live without hearing God’s voice. Listening to God is absolutely essential. Yet, the reality is that many Christians are simply getting by day to day, unaware that God is speaking to them, and completely unsure of how to listen.
If this resonates with you, I have some good news that can really help.
And I say this in love: if your life feels completely out of balance—whether it’s in your health, finances, emotions, relationships, or marriage—I can almost guarantee it’s because you’ve been making decisions on your own without seeking God’s direction.
But you don’t have to stay in that place. Just one word from God can turn everything around.
But first, you need to understand some foundational truths—truths that will strengthen your confidence in your relationship with God and lead to a transformed life.
That’s why I want to share with you five ways God speaks to us.
These are the ways that changed my life—and they can do the same for anyone who listens.
1. God Speaks Through Your Conscience
Did you know that one of the primary ways you can hear God’s voice and be guided by Him is through your conscience? God has placed within your heart an inner sense—an intuitive knowledge—of what is right and what is wrong. Your conscience has the ability either to accuse you or to excuse you, and it operates almost automatically. However, this doesn’t mean it is beyond your control.
In fact, 1 John 3:18–21 reveals that you can come to a place where your heart rests assured before God. This means your conscience can actually give you confidence in your relationship with Him:
“whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God.”
—1 John 3:20–21
When you learn to quiet your heart, your conscience can actually become a source of confidence. The apostle Paul mentioned on two occasions that he always made it his aim to keep a clear conscience (Acts 23:1 and 24:16), so that he could live without guilt. This doesn’t mean he was claiming to be sinless or ignoring his conscience; rather, he made it a practice to keep his conscience free from accusation. He put effort into this—and that effort is the key to having a heart that rests assured.
2. God Speaks Through His Word
God communicates with you through His Word, and His Word carries supreme authority. While you may hear many voices and influences in life, nothing should ever contradict or override the Scriptures. The words of the Bible are not the opinions of fallible men—they are inspired by the Holy Spirit. Believing this truth is absolutely essential to hearing and recognizing God’s voice.
God’s Word must be your standard for discerning whether a message truly comes from Him.
That’s why it is so vital to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). If something does not line up with God’s Word, reject it.
But how can you know whether what you are hearing is really God’s voice?
Hebrews 4:12 says that “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart .
Notice this: it is God’s Word that examines you and convinces you—not the other way around. When you doubt whether God is speaking, His Word helps you discern and confirm if it is truly Him.
The truth is this: “Let God be true, and every human being a liar” (Romans 3:4). His Word must remain the absolute truth and the final authority in your life.
3. God Speaks Through Your Spirit
When you are born again, you become one in spirit with the Lord. Yet many Christians are unaware of this spiritual reality. They often identify more with their flesh than with Christ in the spirit. But you don’t need to rely on outward signs or circumstances in order to hear God’s voice. You can live “by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7), allowing God to speak to you from within—His Spirit speaking to your spirit.
To discern whether what you are hearing is truly from God, you must use His Word to distinguish between what comes from your flesh and what comes from your reborn spirit. Both the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit are essential.
Your spirit, made alive in Christ, has access to God’s wisdom, and His peace is meant to act as an umpire in your heart, guiding you in your decisions. If you struggle to discern that peace, seek counsel from a trusted mentor, or begin moving in the direction where you sense the most peace. At times, if you feel a holy restlessness, it may be God’s way of nudging you out of your comfort zone into something new.
Follow the peace of God—it will never fail you.
4. God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit
Another powerful way to hear God’s voice is through the Holy Spirit. While there are many spiritual gifts such as prophecy, wisdom, and knowledge, the apostle Paul emphasized that his influence did not come from charisma or eloquence but from operating in the power of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2). In the same way, accomplishing God’s will requires supernatural power that goes beyond human ability.
To hear God’s voice, you need the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul highlights this in 1 Corinthians 2:9–14. You cannot rely merely on your own abilities to fulfill God’s purposes for your life. The Holy Spirit reveals to you the wisdom of God—a wisdom that comes by revelation, not education. He will also guide you into all truth and even disclose things to come (John 16:13). You must depend on Him for supernatural insight.
5. God Speaks Through People and Circumstances Around You
When a believer is weakened in faith, caught in sin, or simply too distracted by the busyness of life, God may choose to speak through the people around them—sometimes even through dreams or through obstacles in their circumstances.
For example, when David was entangled in sin, God sent the prophet Nathan to confront him:
“Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own” (2 Samuel 12:9).
“Then David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’ Nathan replied, ‘The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die’” (2 Samuel 12:13).
When David was blinded by the pleasures of sin, Nathan’s rebuke brought him to repentance. In the same way, when we are weak or confused, we must not ignore the counsel of those God places around us. Very often, their words of correction or encouragement may be God Himself speaking directly to us.
As Scripture promises, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). If you begin investing time in applying what I am sharing with you here, you will start to hear God speaking to you—I guarantee it!
